Regions of Uzbekistan – Where to go?

The Republic of Uzbekistan is divided into 12 regions (viloyat), 1 Sovereign Republic of Karakalpakstan and 1 city of central subordination (Tashkent). The regions and the republic are divided into districts called tuman and cities of regional (republican) subordination.

Tashkent city (Toshkent) is the capital of Uzbekistan, the largest city in Central Asia, located in the northeastern part of the republic, in the valley of the Chirchik River, at an altitude of 440-480 meters and occupies an area of 30,000 hectares. The population is approximately 2.5 million people. The city consists of 12 districts.

The Republic of Karakalpakstan is a sovereign republic within the Republic of Uzbekistan, which is the largest region by area and occupies 40% of the territory. The territory of the Republic is 166,600 square kilometers and more than 80% of the territory is occupied by deserts.

It borders Kazakhstan from the north, northwest and west, Turkmenistan from the south, Khorezm and Bukhara regions (vilayat) from the southeast and Navoi region of Uzbekistan from the east.

The Republic of Karakalpakstan is divided into 16 districts and the city of republican significance of Nukus, the capital of the republic. It has both the main state symbols of Uzbekistan and its own flag, emblem and anthem, as well as its own constitution.

Traveling to the Republic of Karakalpakstan, you will be able to visit such sights as the city of Muynak and the so-called graveyard of ships in Aralkum desert. The Aral Sea itself is of great interest to travelers. Many people want to see the drying sea and the former territory.

Andijan region is the smallest in area, less than 1% of the territory of the entire republic occupies the eastern part of the Fergana Valley, the area of which is 4240 square kilometers. It borders Kyrgyzstan, Ferghana and Namangan regions. The Andijan region includes 14 districts and 2 cities of regional subordination.

Bukhara region is located in the south-west of Uzbekistan and borders with Turkmenistan, Khorezm, Navoi, Kashkadarya regions and the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan. The area of the region is 40,220 square kilometers and more than 90% of the territory is occupied by the sands of the Kyzyl Kum desert.

Bukhara region consists of 11 districts. The administrative center of the region is Bukhara.

The Jizzakh region is located in the central part of Uzbekistan with an area of 20,500 square kilometers. In the north it borders with the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Syrdarya region, in the southeast with Tajikistan, in the west with Navoi and Samarkand regions. The region includes 12 districts and the city of regional subordination – Jizzakh.

The Jizzakh region attracts with its flora and fauna. Once in this area, do not miss the chance to visit the Zaamin State Reserve, the Nuratinsky Reserve, the Eastern Biota of Majrum – a giant thousand–year-old Savra tree (Biota orientalis) – the eastern Biota, in the Majrum forestry. Kashkadarya region is located in the southern part of the country, on the western slope of the Pamir-Alai Mountains. It borders Tajikistan in the east, Surkhadarya region in the southeast, Navoi and Samarkand regions in the north, Bukhara region in the northwest, Turkmenistan in the west. The area of the Kashkadarya region is 28,570 square kilometers. The region is divided into 14 districts. The administrative center is the city of Karshi.

Among the most popular attractions of Kashkadarya region are:

  • Ak-Sarai Palace in Shakhrisabz. This building is the only surviving residence of Amir Temur, built in the 14th and 15th centuries.
  • Dorut-Tilovat memorial complex (“The Place of reading the Koran”), the tomb of the house of Temurids in the city of Shakhrizabz.
  • The monument to Amir Temur was built for his 660th birthday and erected in Amir Temur’s hometown – Shakhrisabz.
  • The Dorus-Siadat complex is located in the southwest of Shakhrisabz and was built immediately after the death of Temur’s son Jahongir. Translated, it means “the repository of power”.

Navoi region is located in the central part of the republic. It borders Kazakhstan, the Republic of Karakalpakstan, as well as the Jizzakh, Samarkand and Bukhara regions. The area of the region is 110,800 square kilometers.

The Navoi region includes 8 districts, 6 cities, 9 urban settlements and 53 villages. The administrative center is the city of Navoi.

One of the most beautiful places in the region is Lake Aydarkul. The Chashma religious complex is located here, as well as the remains of the Rabat-i-Malik fortress built in the 11th century. If you dream of seeing Bronze Age petroglyphs, then you will find more than 4,000 petroglyphs in the Sarmyshsay gorge in the mountain ranges of Navbakhor district.

Namangan region has an area of 7,900 square kilometers and borders Tashkent region in the west, Tajikistan in the southwest, Andijan region in the east, Ferghana Region in the south, Kyrgyzstan in the north.

The region includes 11 districts, 8 cities, 12 urban settlements and about 100 villages. The administrative center of the region is the city of Namangan.

Namangan has attractions such as the Namangani Mausoleum, the Mavlon-buva Complex, the Mausoleum of Khoja Amin Kabri etc.

Samarkand region is located in the central part of the country and is an important economic and cultural region of the country. It borders Navoi region in the north, northwest and west, Kashkadarya region in the south, Tajikistan in the east and Jizzakh region in the northeast. The area is 16,800 square kilometers.

The region consists of 14 districts and 4 cities of regional subordination. The administrative center is the city of Samarkand, one of the oldest cities in the world.

Surkhandarya region is the southernmost region of Uzbekistan with an area of 20,800 square kilometers. It borders Afghanistan in the south, Turkmenistan in the southwest, Kashkadarya region in the northwest, Tajikistan in the east, northeast and north.

The region consists of 14 districts and 1 city of regional subordination – Termez, which is the administrative center of the region.

Syrdarya region is located in the central part of the country, the area of which is 4028 square kilometers. It borders Kazakhstan in the north, Tajikistan in the south, Jizzakh region in the west and Tashkent region in the east.

The Syrdarya region consists of 8 districts and 3 cities of regional subordination. The administrative center of the region is the city of Gulistan.

Tashkent region is located in the north-east of the country, with an area of 15,300 square kilometers. It borders Kazakhstan in the north and northwest, Kyrgyzstan in the northeast, Namangan region in the east, Tajikistan in the south, and Syrdarya region in the southwest. The region consists of 15 districts, 7 cities of regional significance. The administrative center of the region is the city of Nurafshan.

The Ferghana region is located in the southern part of the Ferghana Valley. It borders Namangan region in the north, Andijan region in the northeast, Tajikistan in the west, Kyrgyzstan in the south and southeast. The area of the region is 6800 square kilometers.

The region includes 15 districts, 4 cities of regional subordination and 5 cities of district subordination. Major cities: Ferghana, Kokand, Margilan, Kuva, Kuvasai and Rishtan.

Khorezm region is located in the western part of Uzbekistan, with an area of 6,300 square kilometers. It borders in the north and northwest with the Republic of Karakalpakstan, in the west and south with Turkmenistan, in the southeast, east and northeast with the Bukhara region.

The region is divided into 11 districts and 2 cities of regional subordination – Urgench and Khiva. The administrative center is the city of Urgench.
