Registan Square

Registan Square is located in the center of Samarkand. Translated from Uzbek, “Reg” is sand and “Stan” is a place, that is, a place covered with sand. In ancient times, this central square was indeed covered with sand. Initially, the territory was not surrounded by a madrasah, the buildings appeared a little later. At that time, the city authorities gathered people on the square to announce the decrees of the khan, holidays, public executions and the gathering of armies going to war were also held here.

Now there are three madrassas on the square: Ulugbek, Sherdor and Tillya-Kari, which have become the main attractions of the city. They were built by two rulers at different times.

Thanks to such buildings preserved on the territory of the city, Samarkand was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
