Uzbekistan is a multinational country. According to official data, about 90% of the population are Sunni Muslims, only 1% are Shia Muslims and 4% are Orthodox Christians.
The remaining minority consist of Roman Catholics, Evangelical Christians, Korean Christians, Baptists, Lutherans, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Buddhists, atheists etc.
In Soviet time, religious organizations were not approved by the government and therefore many religious buildings were destroyed.
Today, the Legislation of Uzbekistan treats all faiths with respect. There are about 2.225 religious organizations in the country, 2.050 of which are mosques, Islamic centers and religious educational institutions, 175 Christian churches etc.
The Constitution of Uzbekistan declares freedom of conscience for all. Everyone has the right to profess any religion or not to profess any. The forced imposition of religious views is also unacceptable.
