Ulugbek Madrasah is one of the oldest madrasahs in the territory of Samarkand. The building was erected in 1417-1420 by the ruler of the Temurid state and the scientist-astronomer Ulugbek. Here young students were taught philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, theology.
The word “madrasah” comes from the Arabic “Madras” and literally means “a place to teach”.
Glazed bricks create beautiful ornaments on the yellowish masonry walls. The portal of the madrasah is decorated with patterns of ten-pointed stars symbolizing the sky, astronomy.
