Kosh Madrasah is an architectural ensemble in Bukhara consisting of two madrasahs (Modari Khan and Abdullah Khan) facing each other with facades. Built in the XVI century on behalf of the ruler of the Bukhara Khanate Abdullah Khan II, Kosh-Madrasah means “paired”.
Modari Khan Madrasah was built in 1566-67 and is a traditional Asian structure consisting of two aivans (vaulted rooms) with hujras (residential dormitories for teachers and students) located around the circumference of the central courtyard.
Abdullah Khan Madrasah was built a little later than Modari Khan Madrasah – in 1589-90 and includes a madrasah building with two wings and a majestic entrance portal. Inside the building there is a large lecture hall covered with a magnificent dome.
In terms of its size, Abdullah Khan Madrasah is in third place among all schools in Bukhara (after Kukeldash Madrasah and Miri-Arab Madrasah).
