Sheikhantaur Complex

The Sheikhantaur Complex is the oldest and most interesting historical ensemble of Tashkent. It is located in the business part of the city, not far from one of the most beautiful streets of the capital – Navoi Avenue.

The memorial ensemble was formed around the burial of the revered Muslim Sufi, Sheikh Hovendi at-Tahur (Sheikhantaur), a follower of one of the pillars of Sufism Ahmad Yassawi.

At the end of the 14th century, a modest mausoleum was erected over the grave of the famous theologian who died in 1355, by order of Amir Temur, which marked the beginning of a whole necropolis that grew up near the holy burial by the 19th century.

During the late Middle Ages, the holy Mazar was the most popular place in the city, where rulers, representatives of the nobility and famous citizens were buried. By the end of the 19th century, a whole city of the dead was formed on this place from mausoleums, domed gates, houses, mosques and madrasahs.

Unfortunately, only 3 of the 16 beautiful monuments of spiritual culture have survived to this day.
