Zenkov Cathedral, also known as the Holy Ascension Cathedral, is one of the most significant symbols of Almaty. It was built under the direction of the Russian architect Andrei Pavlovich Zenkov at the beginning of the 20th century (1904-1907).
The cathedral was erected from wood without the use of a single nail. Its height is 54 meters, which makes it one of the tallest wooden cathedrals in the world.
In 1910, after a strong earthquake in Almaty, the cathedral was one of the few surviving structures in the city. During Soviet times, the building was used as a museum, radio station and exhibition pavilion. The cathedral was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church after restoration work in the spring of 1995.
Today it is located in Almaty on the territory of the park named after 28 Panfilovites.
