Park named after 28 Panfilov guardsmen

Park named after 28 Panfilov guardsmen is one of the popular tourist places in the city of Almaty. It is located in the eastern central part of Almaty. The park was built in honor of the Panfilov heroes, 28 soldiers of the Almaty infantry unit who died during the defense of Moscow in World War II.

The park was founded in the 1870s. Its name changed regularly. To celebrate the famous poet Alexander Pushkin’s century of birth, the park was named “Pushkin Garden”. Later in 1919, it was renamed as the “Park of Heroes” in honor of the soldiers of the Red Army who died during the Civil War. Then the park had the name “Federation of Soviet Republics”. And in 1942, it was finally changed to 28 Panfilov guardsmen.

On the territory of the park, there are several historical buildings built in the early and middle of the 20th century, such as the Zenkov Cathedral, the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments, and the Officers’ House.

Currently, the park is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. During the May 9 celebration, Almaty residents lay flowers at the Glory and Eternal Flame Monument in memory of those killed in World War II.
