The largest mosque in Central Asia is Khazret Sultan in Astana.
The name of the mosque was proposed by the ex-president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. It translates as “Holy Sultan”, an epithet used to refer to the great sheikh Khoja Ahmed Yasawi.
The construction of Khazret Sultan lasted five years. Its opening took place on July 6, 2012. It is located on the right bank of the Esil River next to the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation.
Traditional Islamic style was chosen for the mosque’s design, but Kazakh ornaments were also used. Khazret Sultan is very impressive: its building can receive up to 10 thousand people. The area of the mosque is over 11 hectares. The height of the largest dome is 51 meters. In the corners of the mosque there are 4 minarets of 77 meters of height.
Khazret Sultan Mosque is the pride of the residents of not only the capital, but the whole country.
