Museum of Musical Instruments

The Museum of Musical Instruments is located in the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen in Almaty. The museum displays more than 40 varieties of Kazakh folk musical instruments and over 400 exhibits.

The Museum of Musical Instruments was officially opened in the spring of 1981, but it moved to its modern building on Zenkov Street only in 1990. The same year, the museum was named after Ykhylas Dukenuly – the famous Kazakh composer.

The building of the officers’ assembly, where the museum is located today, was constructed in 1908. The author of the project was the famous architect Zenkov, who used the details of old Russian wooden architecture in the decoration of the building. From 2012 to 2013, restoration work was carried out in the museum. Unfortunately, during the reconstruction, its original interior was completely changed and lost.

The museum of musical instruments includes the following exhibition halls: the hall of musical instruments of the Turkic peoples, the hall of wind and percussion-noise instruments, the hall of masters, the hall of kobyz and the hall of musical instruments of the people of the world.
