The Museum of Almaty is a large scientific and cultural center founded in 2001. The museum collection contains about 35 thousand exhibits. It presents works of fine art, unique artifacts of ethnic groups living in Almaty, including exhibits of Kazakh ethnography.
In 2015 it entered the Association of Museums of the city of Almaty along with Kunayev Museum, the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments, Tlendiev Museum and others.
The following year, the museum moved to the building of a former orphanage, which was built under the leadership of the famous architect Paul Gourdet. The Vernensky orphanage shelter is one of the grandiose buildings of the city reflecting the trends of architecture of the late 20th century.
The museum reflects the history of the city of Almaty in its various eras, from its ancient history to modern days. The exhibition halls also give the information about the medieval period, ethnography of Jetysu, the history of mountaineering and other pages from the history of the southern capital of Kazakhstan.
