Imam Al-Bukhari Mausoleum

Imam Al-Bukhari Mausoleum is one of the most revered Islamic shrines in Central Asia. The outstanding theologian Imam Muhammad is buried in this place. In the center of the memorial there is a tomb with the relics of Bukhari Ismail, about 17 meters high. The mausoleum building is covered with a dome in the shape of a hemisphere, decorated with ceramic tiles of sky-blue color.

Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari was born in 810 in Bukhara. His father, one of the interpreters of sacred traditions, died when al-Bukhari was still a child.

The boy stayed with his mother, a well-educated woman who gave the child an excellent education. By the age of 7, he had already studied the entire Quran, and by the age of 10, he knew several thousand hadiths by heart.

Possessing a rare memory, Al-Bukhari knew by heart a little more than 300 thousand hadiths collected by him for almost 42 years, several hundred thousand sacred legends. Al-Bukhari continued to write his book “Al-Jomiy as-Sahih”, which included 7275 authentic hadiths, for almost 16 years.

After all his travels, he returns to Bukhara again, where he began to teach everyone to read and write. But unfortunately, Al-Bukhari leaves Bukhara, deciding to move to Samarkand. Halfway to Samarkand, he dies of a serious illness in the village of Khartang.

He is buried in the local cemetery, which becomes a sacred place of pilgrimage for Muslims. In the XVI century, a mosque was built near the place of his burial and plane trees were planted.
