State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater

State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater considered one of the leading opera houses in Kazakhstan.

The theater was founded in 1933 and was named after the Kazakh cultural figure Kunanbayev. The initial composition of the theater consisted of fifty actors, twenty musicians of the symphony and twelve national orchestras. At the beginning of 1934 it was transformed into a musical theater.

Today, the theater is visited by world-class performers and ballet groups.

The theater building was built in the Stalinist Empire style in combination with national elements. The facade of the building resembles the Alexandrian Theater in St. Petersburg and is one of the most famous sights of the city of Almaty.
