Republic Square in Almaty is located between Zheltoksan Street and Dostyk Avenue.
The decision to create the square is due to the growth of the population in the city, where the old square could no longer receive all the people during mass events. The opening of the square took place in 1975, and 5 years later it was named as “Republic Square”.
Under Kunaev’s regime, 70 Tien Shan spruces were planted on the square along the alley. It was also decorated with other types of trees. Unfortunately, many of them were removed during the construction of an underground shopping center in 2007, which caused a negative reaction from Almaty residents.
The central object of the square is the building of the akimat (city hall) of Almaty. Other architectural monuments located here are the Residence of the First President of Kazakhstan, the Republican Palace of Schoolchildren and the Independence Monument.
Today, Republic Square serves as a place to organize the mass events, festivals, parades, rallies and demonstrations in Almaty.
