Kok Tobe

Kok Tobe is a famous mountain located close to Almaty at an altitude of 1130 meters above sea level. At the top of Kok Tobe there is a popular recreation area. It is one of the favorite places of local residents and tourists.

In 1978, on the slope of Kok Tobe, the construction of a new Almaty television tower began, providing coverage throughout Kazakhstan.

It is possible to get to the mountain by using the cable car built in 1967. For 6 minutes ride in the cable car of 1127 meters long, you can admire the beautiful panoramic views of Almaty. The upper station of the cable car is located in the park on Kok Tobe, and the lower one is in the square close to the Palace of the Republic. There is also a road leading to the mountain.

In the summer of 2004, the reconstruction and strengthening of Kok Tobe slope began. Illegally built buildings (mainly restaurants) were removed from the top of the mountain.

Today, Kok Tobe gathers many visitors. They are attracted by the amazing panorama of Almaty and the snow capped peaks of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, opening from the mountain.
