The construction of the modern museum building was completed in 1985. Before this year the museum was located in the Holy Ascension Cathedral. The interior decoration of the building is made of marble, parquet, granite and non-ferrous metals.
The State Museum consists of 7 exhibition halls, including a hall of paleontology and archeology, a hall of Modern Kazakhstan, a hall of historical ethnography and others.
In 2005, the museum was officially granted the status of a research organization, which expanded its scope and made possible to conduct historical research and expeditions. The museum is also an annual participant in the international action “Museum Night”.
