Butakovskoe gorge is located in the picturesque mountains of Trans Ili Alatau in the territory of Almaty. The gorge is located at an altitude of 1700-2900 meters above sea level. Its length reaches 14 km.
In Soviet times, a sports and tourist base was opened here. Later, the gorge became a center for training athletes; the pioneer camp of the Kazakhfilm studio also functioned here.
In Butakovskoe gorge, hiking trips are often organized through such passes as Butakovsky (2910 m), Lesnoy (2330 m), Komissarovsky (2200 m) and Bezymyanny (1880 m). There are also two small waterfalls on its territory: Lower and Upper Butakovskoe waterfalls. The Lower Waterfall has a height of 30 meters and it is the largest and most impressive waterfall in the gorge.
