The Almaty metro is one of the most beautiful in the world.
The first line was opened on December 1, 2011 after a long construction, which lasted for more than 23 years. In 2015, the metro was expanded by opening a new Moscow station.
The construction of the Metro started in 1988. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, funding was cut and its construction stopped.
In 2003, the government of Kazakhstan launched a new development initiative that included government funds to continue the metro’s building. In 2007, a 1.271 km tunnel between Almaly and Abai stations was completed. The same year, the construction of a tunnel from Abai in the direction of the Baikonur station was finished.
Today, Almaty Metro has a route of 11.3 kilometers length and it serves nine stations. About seven million passengers use the metro annually. With clean and air-conditioned wagons arriving every 10-15 minutes, this is definitely a pleasant way to travel in summer when outside temperature rises 30-35 degrees Celsius.
