Akyrtas stone complex

Akyrtas stone complex is located in the Zhambyl region, 40 km from the city of Taraz.

The name Akyrtas in translation from the Kazakh language means “the last stone”. The complex consist of the ruins of a construction made of huge stones.

Despite the fact that Akyrtas is located in a uninhabited desert steppe where there is no water, the builders managed to build a clay water pipeline through which they brought water from the mountains. The structure itself was built of stone and clay and consists of 18 rooms and three narrow rooms, as well as unbuilt premises.

According to one version of scientists, Akyrtas was a Nestorian monastery, others insist that it was Buddhist. According to other assumptions, it was a city that once stood on the Great Silk Road.

Nowadays this place is considered truly mysterious, it is believed that the stones heal with magnetism. This place is annually visited by numerous tourists from different countries and pilgrims. Since 2014, Akyrtas has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
