Kara Kum meaning “Black Sand”, also known as the Karakum Desert, is a vast desert region in Turkmenistan that spans approximately 350,000 square kilometers. It is one of the largest deserts in Central Asia and is characterized by its arid climate, shifting sand dunes, and sparse vegetation.
The features of Kara Kum a mix of sandy dunes, gravel plains. The landscape is dominated by sand dunes that can reach heights of up to 150 meters. The climate is extremely dry, with temperatures ranging from very hot in the summer to cold in the winter. Precipitation is scarce, averaging less than 100mm per year. Scattered throughout its dunes are traces of ancient civilizations and remnants of the Great Silk Road, which once passed through the area, making the Kara Kum not just a natural wonder but a place of historical significance.
Kara Kum desert is home to both the Dromedary (one-humped) and Bactrian (two-humped) camels, although the Dromedary is more common in this region.
