There are about 500 lakes in Uzbekistan, many of which are located mainly high in the mountains in hard-to-reach places and are a potential source of clean, fresh water. Each of them is unique and beautiful in its own way.
Going on a trip to Uzbekistan, be sure to visit at least one of the following lakes:
Aral Sea
The Aral Sea is considered the largest lake located on the territory of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
Even 65 years ago, the lake was considered the fourth largest in the world and was a favorite place for many locals and tourists. Many species of fish were found here and ships sailed, large cargo transportation took place between the ports of Aralsk, located in Kazakhstan, and Muynak in Uzbekistan.
As a result of the excessive use of water for irrigation of fields, the Aral Lake began to dry up quickly, which led to the breakup into two independent reservoirs. At present, only two small reservoirs remain in place of the sea: The Large and Small Aral Sea. The Big Sea is located on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and the Small Aral Sea is completely located on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Despite the fact that the area of the lake has decreased significantly, the lake still attracts tourists from many countries with its picturesque landscapes, sandy-salty desert and sunken ships on the shore of the lake.
Aidarkul Sea
Aydarkul is an artificial lake located in the Kyzylkum desert in the northeastern part of Uzbekistan. This reservoir was created in 1969 in the Arnasay lowland, and since then it has only increased in size.
Today its area occupies about 4000 km2 and it is quite possible that in the future it will become the largest lake in Uzbekistan.
This place is great for fishing and summer holidays, away from the bustle of the city.
Charvak
The Charvak reservoir is located at an altitude of 1620 m, 60 km from the city of Tashkent. This picturesque mountain lake has become one of the favorite weekend getaways regardless of the season.
There are many hotels around the reservoir where you can stay, for the lovers of swimming and sunbathing there are beach areas, and for fans of extreme recreation there is the opportunity to try paragliding or rafting.
