Alabai Monument

The Alabai Monument, located in Ashgabat, is a grand statue dedicated to the Alabai dog breed, also known as the Central Asian Shepherd Dog. This breed is highly regarded in Turkmenistan for its loyalty, strength, and historical role in guarding livestock and homes, especially in the rural regions of the country.

The statue stands at an impressive height of 15 meters (about 49 feet) and was unveiled in November 2020 by Turkmenistan’s president, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, who is known for his affection for the breed. The monument portrays a majestic Alabai dog standing proudly on a pedestal, with its head held high, symbolizing the strength and importance of the breed in Turkmen culture. The statue itself is gilded, which adds a sense of grandeur and prestige to the structure. Below the statue, there is a relief featuring scenes of traditional Turkmen life, emphasizing the deep connection between the Alabai dog and the Turkmen people. The Alabai breed has been part of Turkmen life for centuries, serving as loyal guardians of herds and homes. The dogs are known for their bravery, intelligence, and endurance, traits that make them valuable companions in Turkmenistan’s harsh desert environment.

In Turkmen culture, the Alabai is not just a dog but a symbol of the nation’s resilience and steadfastness. The decision to erect a monument was seen as a tribute to the breed’s historical significance and its enduring role in Turkmen society.
