Darwaza

Darwaza, also known as the “Door to Hell,” is a fascinating natural gas crater located in Turkmenistan. It is situated in the Karakum Desert, and has been burning since 1971, when a Soviet drilling rig accidentally collapsed into an underground cavern filled with natural gas. To prevent the spread of methane gas, scientists ignited the crater, expecting it to burn out in a few weeks. Instead, it has continued to blaze for decades.

The crater is about 70 meters wide and emits a haunting glow, especially at night, making it a striking sight against the desert landscape. The surrounding area offers opportunities for camping, and the view of the burning crater against the backdrop of the starry desert sky is an unforgettable experience.
