Kazakh ornaments and their meanings

Since ancient times, ornaments have been used in almost all spheres of Kazakh life.

Kazakh ornaments served not only as decoration, but also conveyed a certain semantic connotation. It was believed that Kazakh ornaments served as a talisman and attracted good luck and happiness to their owner.

Kazakh ornaments reflect the realities of the environment, from which you can see flora and fauna, people, various household items, livestock, nomadic lifestyle.

Kazakhs decorated clothes, dwellings, dishes, jewelry and carpets with ornaments. Each ornament carries a certain meaning, a secret sign. For example, the image of a ram’s horn is very often found in Kazakh ornaments and means prosperity, kindness and strength, and the image of a bird’s beak meant freedom and happiness, a camel’s trail – a long road, a dog’s tail – a close distance, the image of the spine was a symbol of courage and perseverance.

Plant motifs such as flowers, leaves and fruits can also be found on embroidery. They represent the eternal renewal and rebirth of life, abundance.

Color plays an important role in the interpretation of the Kazakh ornament. Color not only introduces rhythmic alternation into the composition of homogeneous motifs, but also creates an ornamental pattern, makes possible different perceptions of the same patterns.

Traditions

Kazakh woven products are dominated by such a combination of colors as burgundy, velvet-black and blue. Here red represents fire, the energy of the sun and love, blue – sky, white – truth, yellow – wisdom, morality and sadness, and green – youth and spring.

Nowadays, the traditions of the production of clothing and household items have been preserved and passed down from generation to generation.
