Kolsay – blue crystal of Kazakhstan

Kolsay lakes are one of the most beautiful places that adorns the nature of Kazakhstan. They also gave the symbolic name “blue crystal of the Northern Tien Shan“. Translated from the Kazakh language, “kolsay” means “a lake in a gorge”, since all three lakes are located in the most picturesque gorge of the eastern part of the Kungey Alatau ridge, which is 300 km from Almaty.

Kolsay lakes were formed as a result of landslides that blocked the flow of the river in several places and turned into ordinary barriers. Due to the rocky coasts, coniferous forests, underwater vegetation, the azure color predominates, but also, depending on the weather, the color changes from green, in some places even to black.

The lofty mountainous Alatau with snow-white cover on the peaks give a special beauty to the landscape. Rest on the lakeshore gives a cool mountain air with the aroma of herbs and flowers and turns an ordinary trip into magic.
