Ak Baital pass

Ak-Baital Pass, located in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, is one of the highest motorable passes in the world, standing at an elevation of 4,655 meters (15,272 feet) above sea level. It lies on the famous Pamir Highway, a legendary route which serves as a breathtaking gateway between the towns of Murghab and Karakul.

The name “Ak-Baital” translates to “White Mare” in Kyrgyz, reflecting the stark, pristine landscapes that surround the pass. The area is known for its rugged, desolate beauty, with vast, sweeping views of snow-capped peaks, barren high-altitude plains, and the occasional sighting of wildlife such as yaks and Marco Polo sheep.

Travelers crossing Ak-Baital Pass often experience the extreme conditions of the high altitude, with thin air and unpredictable weather, but the sheer grandeur of the scenery makes the journey unforgettable. The pass is a highlight for adventurers and cyclists traveling along the Pamir Highway, offering a glimpse into the dramatic, remote wilderness of the “Roof of the World.”
