Pamir Highway – The roof of the World

Meeting on the Dushanbe international airport in the morning. Today we will spend the day exploring Dushanbe.

Dushanbe (means Monday) is a relatively new city that was formed in 1925 on the site of a small village Dushanbe, place of the large bazaar on Mondays.
During the Soviet period, the city was called Stalinabad (1929-1961) Political, Cultural, Educational and Financial Center of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Visits:

• National museum of Tajikistan
• Flagpole (165m). Palace of nation.
• Museum of ethnography.
• Nawruz palace.
• Central bazar.
• City center, Dusti square.
• Ismail Somoni monument.

Night in the hotel.

Meals included: no meals

In the morning departure to the East. Our destination is Darvaz district (first district of GBAO, Pamir).

The road will be mostly of poor quality, but this will compensate for the beautiful scenery and untouched nature. 8 hrs driving day.

Upon arrival accommodation in local family guesthouse. Rest

Please Note in 2024 that road was fully closed for travelers, in case of any problems with road we will use alternative way along the south Tajikistan.

After breakfast departure to Khijez village which is located in Rushan district and Bartang valley.

We will drive along live border with Afghanistan Panj river.

Upon arrival in Rushan district center visit Vamar fortress and central market. Night in Rushan

In the morning departure up to the Bartang lake few km. to the walking bridge wich goues to the Jisev gorge.

Walking trip 16 km to the Jisev Lake and back. (Walkiing trip along beautiful gorge, river, and village)

After visiting the Jizev lake transfer to the Khorog city.

Accommodation: Simple Hotel (Lal inn hotel) 

Before leaving Khorog, we will visit the Bazaar and the Ismaili Center (if it is open that day).

Departure to the Wakhan valley to the village of Yamg.

On the way, we will enjoy the views of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. We will visit the mountain springs and the sanatorium Garm Chashma. Stop for lunch in Ishkashim.

Continuing our journey, we can visit the ruins of the Kah-Kakha fortress and the sacred place of the Ismailis “Ismaili Mazar”.

Walking is through the villages along the way and a photo stops.

Upon arrival to the Yamg village (or Vrang village in case of overbookd homestays in Yag) accommodation in the homestay of local teacher.

Today will be devoted to hot springs and the history of the Wakhan Valley.

In the morning, we will visit the Bibi Fotima Zukhro hot spring and the ruins of the Yamchun fortress (20 km up from Yamg village)

Upon returning to the village of Yamg, lunch at a local house and a visit to the Muborak Wakhoni Museum.

We continue our way to Langar village. On the way, visit the Buddhist stupa in Vrang (needed to walk there) and the Petroglyphs in Langar village.

Upon arrival accommodation in local homestay, dinner and rest.

After breakfast driving to Bulunkul village thought Khargush pass.

Lunch in Bulunkul. Visit Bulunkul and Yashinkul lakes, departure to the Murgab, Visit Alichur village,.in Murgab visit Yak house with handy crafts souvenir shop.

Today we will drive along M41 Pamir highway along the highest part of the road in Tajikistan. Visit Ak Baitall pass (4655m) highest point of the tour.

Visit Karakul Lake and Karakul village. We will make Lunch in local homestay with Kyrgyz family (Optional). Explore village and lakeside, meet local people.

Departure back to the Murgab

In the morning we leave Murgab and will drive back to the Khorog city by the north way, thru the Koytezak pass and along Gunt river.

On the way visit thermal hot spring sanatorium Jelondi.

Owernight in Khorog.

Today we will drive from Khorog to the Kalaikhumb by the same way.

We will drive from Khorog to the Kalaikhumb along Panj river and border with Afghanistan.

Night in Kalaikhumb.

In the morning departure to Dushanbe. Let’s go back another way, through the south.

Along the Pyanj River, through the Shurobad pass. On the way, stop at the observation deck of the Nurek reservoir.

The quality of the road surface will be very good, we will drive quickly and comfortably. It feels like a return to civilization.

Upon arrival in Dushanbe, hotel accommodation and rest.

Transfer to the airport. Departure.
